A presence
She has been on the stage of the Romanian National Theatre since 2009 — and she has never played the same kind of woman twice.
Costina Cheyrouze was born in Constanța, on the Black Sea, and trained first to teach children before deciding that the stage would be her classroom. She graduated in acting from the National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest in the class of Adrian Pintea, spent two seasons at the Constanța State Theatre, and was then engaged by Ion Caramitru at the National Theatre “I.L. Caragiale”.
Since her debut there as Ann Deever in Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, opposite Victor Rebengiuc and Sanda Toma, she has moved between American realism, French farce, Swiss parable and Romanian decadence with the same unhurried precision — a Blanche DuBois in Târgoviște, a Lady Capulet under Yuri Kordonsky, an Elvira in Dragoș Galgoțiu’s carnival of Craii de Curtea-Veche.

Poems for those who stay at home
In the spring of 2020, with the theatres dark, Costina Cheyrouze sat down in front of a bookcase and a ribbon microphone and began to read. Forty-eight Romanian poems, from Eminescu to Ana Blandiana, one at a time, to anyone who would listen. It became the largest single body of recorded Romanian poetry read by a working actress of her generation.

She is the Romanian voice of Mary Poppins in Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns — and, before that, the voice of seven radio-theatre productions for Radio Romania, from Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew to Caragiale’s A Stormy Night.
